Concluimos con éxito los talleres sobre tiburones blancos con pescadores de Sonora

By Karina Busto

During the week of November 3 to 7, Dr. Mauricio Hoyos and MSc Isaí Barba presented the talk “Current situation of the white shark in Mexico” to fishermen from different cooperatives in the state of Sonora. Dr. Hoyos spoke to them about different topics about the species: biology, reproduction, feeding, distribution, current state of conservation, studies they would like to perform in the upper Gulf of California, as well as recommendations to avoid incidents with white sharks.

Four workshops were held in Bahía Kino, Yavaros, El Paredón and Puerto Peñasco. Around 30 to 50 fishermen participated in each place, who since 2018 have shared the problem of encounters with white sharks while carrying out their fishing work. In addition to the talks, our team participated in the delivery of anti-shark bracelets awarded by SAGARHPA in Puerto Peñasco. These bracelets will be useful to scare away sharks, since they generate a change in the electromagnetic field around the diver, which causes some discomfort to the shark.

With these actions we hope that incidents with white sharks in the upper Gulf of California and on the coast of Sonora will be reduced, and that fishermen will know the necessary safety measures to avoid them. We also want them to be aware of the importance of sharks for marine ecosystems and to contribute to the conservation of the species in these regions.

Project carried out by Mauricio Hoyos, Omar Santana, Isaí Barba, with the collaboration of the government of Sonora, SAGARHPA, CEDO, INAPESCA, CIAD, ECOCIMATI, and with the support of WWF-Mexico.
